Cool idea: before you buy something, enter its UPC into this site (via your mobile device of choice) to find out about its environmental impact - greenscan
The site doesn’t have a lot of information yet, but this is a great idea. Since I don’t have a cell phone, I’d love to see an API published that online retailers could access.

Gallery Watch provides real-time updates and access to Congressional documents “for searching, tracking, managing and analyzing Texas and Federal Legislative, Regulatory and Appropriation’s processes”.
I’m not much of a poli-head these days but this is cool.

I’m fantasizing about summer by compiling my summer reading list. I have a few books to read already but I especially like feminist scifi and that’s hard to find. So, here’s some research I did looking for it. One of my favorite feminist scifi/futuristic utopian books (The Fifth Sacred Thing by Starhawk) isn’t listed on any of these lists.

Ever tried to come up with a good response when retailers ask you your name, zip code, phone number, some personal info unnecessary to your transaction?
Well, thanks to micahpeak, I’ve got a working algorithm. Give them the name of the company as your name so when you start getting spammy emails, dead tree mailings and phone calls you know who sold your information.
Actually, I usually give out bogus information anyway. (Really, my phone number is 555-1212, it’s just the darnedest thang).
Most importantly, I refuse to cough up my local zip code. The only reason for a retailer to collect zip codes is to determine where to build next. And personally I think we have enough big box stores marring the landscape around here. We don’t need more.
